![]() Call of Duty games have always struggled with low tickrate servers that let you get shot after you've already made it behind cover, but this is the worst it has felt in years. Thanks, I hate it!īallistics are also a major step back in Cold War. Across four different matches, I’ve shot down choppers just to watch another fly into the airspace ten seconds later, and another after that. ![]() If that sounds like a recipe for more chaos than ever, you’d be correct. Going on a streak will help earn them faster, but the new system allows even a simpleton like me to carpet bomb the map with napalm at least once per match. Except now, progress toward streaks isn’t reset upon death (making “streak” a total misnomer). ![]() Cold War switches back to the Treyarch-style of scorestreaks that account for all points earned, not just kills. This is a roundabout way of saying that killstreaks are still around and still unfortunately prominent. The need for Ghost or Cold Blooded wastes a slot I’d rather use on a fun perk that lets me shoot while sprinting. All of the stealth-based perks like Ghost that I usually use to avoid UAVs are relegated to the third slot. Perks in the first two slots are minor bonuses to grenade resistances and cooldowns. I think this is partly why perks are less impactful this time around. I enjoy the absurdity of Gunfighter, which lets you stick eight attachments to a gun instead of the usual five, though I suspect most players will stick to the Perk Greed wildcard to score an extra three perks for free. Wildcards, class modifiers seen in past Black Ops games, let you bend the rules in some fun ways. I'll have to pass on BLOPS2, not out of rage, but out of ennui.Treyarch’s latest take on Create-a-Class does come with a few improvements. Add in that the balancing of a multiplayer FPS is a task that is best taken gradually with an open schedule for balance fixes, and I grow even wearier of the Call of Duty formula, and how far it's fallen from the days of CoD1, CoD2, and CoD4. I think back to wunderbred's lamentation of there not being any solid story-driven FPSes, and of them taking over 4 years to properly develop. I feel almost the same way about BLOPS2: they seem to be adding DX11 partially as a bullet point, and partially to speed up some rendering techniques, but at the end of the day, they still have to maintain feature parity with the 360 and PS3 versions, and it's going to be for a 6-hour Baysplosionfest amalgmation of the Call of Duty formula, with multiplayer that straddles the line between following the CoD formula too closely and alienating it altogether. Was it a versatile usage of MMX instructions? Not really we were still learning programming concepts, so it was a stepping stone, though nowhere near as advanced as some of the sound and visualization programs I had that required MMX to process tons of stuff. However, our executable was one that required MMX. Could we have done the same with C? Yes, though it would've taken more instructions. This news item reminds me of Intro to C class, where the professor gave us an example of ASM to call an MMX SIMD instruction to perform parallel adding to a number of variables. To adjust single-player FOV, one had to edit the config file directly, though at least Treyarch allowed this. We'll see if those "additional graphics options on PC" pan out on CoD:BLOPS1, the PC graphics options didn't look too different than CoD:WaW.

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Alfonso Cuaron took things to a new level: The kids suddenly looked scruffier (their uniforms stopped looking perfect, and Hermione stopped wearing white tights and Mary Janes, for heaven's sake, when sneaking out at night) and more real, and the look of the film was darker and more artful. (Which, to be fair, they are - adorable, that is.) (Which, to be fair, they are.) Chamber of Secrets, particularly, gets very dull with all the flying cars and spider nonsense, and relies far too heavily on close-ups of adorable tots smiling. ![]() Chris Columbus directed the first two, and while they're certainly cute (and he deserves immense credit for casting the franchise), they play more like kiddie movies. In a nutshell, there are the first two movies, and then there are the other four - the contrast is even stronger when you watch these movies back to back. Number of spells successfully cast solely by Ron, in all six movies: 2 The big picture: the directors Number of spells successfully cast solely by Hermione, in all six movies: 17 Watch Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince closely and you'll see a few scenes carefully staged so she doesn't face the camera. The lone disappointment: Bonnie Wright as Ginny Weasley, who's in every movie but remains fairly wooden as an actress. The big picture: the kidsĪctors Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson have all grown up on the big screen quite nicely it's actually shocking to see how little they look in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." Watson, to my eye, had the most ease on screen as a child - at 10 she had the comic timing that many adult actresses would kill for - but Radcliffe (as Harry) and Grint (Ron) were everything they needed to be.įor that matter, nearly every child cast in this film - most in recurring roles - is remarkably good and grew up to be even better, particularly Evanna Lynch as Luna Lovegood (this girl is absolutely mesmerizing, and completely understands the character), Oliver and James Phelps as twins George and Fred Weasley (somebody get these guys a comedy tour), and Matthew Lewis, who's got a lot of blink-and-you'll-miss-them poignant moments as Neville Longbottom. All this struck me as a feat quite worthy of Gryffindor delightful as the experience was, only the brave - or the heroically foolish, or at least those possessed of comfortable chairs - should attempt six movies in a row.Īnd what did I learn from the Potterthon? Various random musings, as follows. Meals were eaten in front of the screen breaks between movies were no more than 10 minutes. I watched every minute of every movie - not even fast-forwarding the dull parts in the last hour of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" - except for the end credits, which weren't legible on my TV screen and which would have added at least another hour to the viewing total (they last about 10-15 minutes per movie). The Potterthon at my house began at approximately 7:45am (when the sunrise would have been, if there had been one, which seemed perfectly Potteresque) and ended roughly 15 hours later, a little before 11pm. I told some people of this plan and noted that the responses fell neatly into two categories: "Oh, that sounds like so much fun!" and (I'm quoting directly here) "You are insane, lady." A stunt, to be sure, but in my line of work there aren't too many opportunities for such things, and I've always wanted to be able to say that I do my own stunt work. On a dark, stormy Thursday in late October, in anticipation of the opening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I I watched all six Harry Potter movies back to back. ![]() Now you can get XP for doing useful things in a battle, whether that means fulfilling an objective or successfully using a class-specific power. Just as importantly, the game's experience (XP) grind no longer hinges on challenges that players have to complete in order-which made the original game's endgame grind pretty brutal, since a single impossible-to-fetch challenge would block any progress. (EA did not provide a copy of the game on PC ahead of the game's launch, but the PC version of GW1 scaled pretty well across various configurations, and hopefully this sequel is just as flexible.)This is exactly what the game needed: a large enough spread of peculiar and specific classes so that its asymmetrical battles leave enough wiggle room for any class on either side to still have fun things to do. Thankfully, the shadow-light play and intricately detailed plant and zombie characters still look quite good, and they run at a mostly steady 60 frames per second on both consoles-though in my anecdotal experience, I actually noticed better performance on average on the Xbox One build. It's so prevalent that it borders on distracting. I didn't expect this title to stand toe-to-toe with the fidelity of Star Wars Battlefront or even Battlefield 4, but I was surprised to see so much pop-in of debris, foliage, and grass in the game's Xbox One and PlayStation 4 builds. Visual performanceLike most EA games these days, GW2 has been built in DICE's Frostbite 3 engine. This makes certain classes less fun to play if the rest of your team favors other classes too heavily. The issues with those classes come mostly from how their array of powers leave a few too many vulnerabilities open. Last year's classes remain largely unchanged-so much so, in fact, that most unlocks accrued in the 2014 game can be automatically transferred to the new one. The sequel's most noticeable change comes from an increased number of classes on both sides of the white picket fence-and it's the game's true saving grace. Each character comes with its own primary, unlimited-ammo weapon and three recharge-to-use, class-specific powers, ranging from rocket launchers to acrobatic maneuvers, bombs, healing powers, and more. Instead of hovering over a garden and placing amped-up plants to defend against a variety of silly, undead fighters, you now take direct control of a single creature on either side of the conflict and engage in one of a few types of online, third-person-shooter battling. GW2's core concept remains the same as the original-meaning the series barely resembles the popular, accessible tower-defense game it's named after. ![]() In short, everything good about the original 2014 game has gotten better, and everything bad about it has gotten worse. ![]() GW2 does a lousy job inviting players into its universe, because it wallops them over the head with a sloppily curated single-player campaign, a confusing meta-structure, and a ridiculous focus on grinding for content unlocks. ![]() Platform: Xbox One (reviewed), PlayStation 4, Windowsīut boy, do EA and Popcap seem to have it in for players in search of that content. ![]() ![]() But hosting a quality bulk email service is a bit expensive.
